The Stable Café was only erected at its current location in the 1990s, although the building itself is much older. Originally, the building served as a stable, and it is from this that the name "Stable Café" originated. On the Savotta Cabin side, hot juice and doughnuts were already being sold to skiers in the 1950s.
The history of Peurakaltio’s forestry operations began in 1948 with the completion of the Savotta Cabin. At its peak, over 600 men worked in the logging operations along the Aakenus and Äkäs rivers. There were several Savotta cabins in the area, and dozens of men stayed in the cramped cabins at a time. The landladies lived on their own side, from where they provided meals to the men through "life windows." The forestry operations employed local people, but there were also workers from other areas, known as "flying men." Occasionally, criminals evading the authorities would join the workers, which led the border guard to occasionally carry out inspections at the cabins. The logging operations at Peurakaltio ended in the 1960s.
If you are interested in the forestry tradition, the Kellokas Nature Centre has a wealth of material and stories from the past related to this tradition. We highly recommend a visit!
